Finding meaning in a world gone mad I Iain McGilchrist
Iain McGilchrist is an Oxford literary scholar, and a doctor in psychiatry and neuroscience. A champion of holistic thinking, Iain’s tour-de-force book The Master and His Emissary, along with his more recent The Matter with Things, have transformed academic and popular understanding not only of the human brain, but also of the importance of a fundamental worldview shift. His works sustain an in-depth critique of reductionism, and unfold different approaches for understanding who we are and what the world is.
In this episode, Iain’s research on the differences between the left and right hemispheres provide the backdrop for discussions of the human experience of the sublime, and how important that experience is if we are to reestablish social and ecological balance in the world. He discusses his long-standing appreciation for the local, the place-based and the natural, suggesting that these offer avenues towards right-hemisphere aspects of our experience - aspects which have been neglected to our detriment.

This should be required viewing for everyone. The mess of the last 40 years - and especially the past decade - summed up and put to rights in less than 20 minutes. It could all be so much better with relatively simple changes, but it seems people just won't wake up and take action against those in power ruining our cultures and our lives.

I can not believe you think Douglas Murray is great, although very bright, he is very arrogant and part if the Tufton St problem. I think you have blind spots with regard to economics, the so called educated and generally the British.

Yeah I agree, well encapsulated. Politically, the notion that we are a liberal democracy is an ideological facade. It's power now is in corporate capitalism on the one hand and being a militarised state on the other. Hell is where we're heading again but that doesn't surprise me in Europe, biggest hotheads on the planet ever. Wars for the last 1000 years with hardly a let up and probably for the next 1000, here there and everywhere. Divine connection is in Trinitarian politics? Not that you hear much from the Lords Spiritual in the House of Lords.

More excellent discussion from Iain McGilchrist. My only gripe is I've now heard him say in several talks that "capitalism and social media" are problematic. Blaming social media seems redundant, because it very likely would have been a net positive if it wasn't shaped by capitalist forces.

Wonderful interview, thanks for sharing this! 9:24 I think AI is not so much about _improving_ our cognition, but outsourcing it to machines, effectively _impairing_ our cognition. There's nothing wrong with improving one's cognition, is there? Isn't that what (good) education does? Computers can also aid in that, as long as we use _it_ as a tool and not the other way around. I'm thinking of judicious use of actual computers, not the "smart" gadgets and apps that are being pushed upon us. Used responsibly, I think computers can be good tools for thought, aiding but not replacing Human Intelligence (HI).

Thank you for sharing this Q&A session. As one who encountered Ancient Futures:Learning from Ladakh approximately 27 years ago, the truthfulness of the message that all food and land relations should be local and indigenous is as fresh as ever. But as mentioned, co-opting is suppressing this truth and extractivism continues to shadow it continuing the oppression. Why? What is causing this simple sensible logic from flourishing widely when people desperately want this solution? I had a systems engineering training which was great at the time but as someone who also enjoyed general science and Nature, I wish I had taken a geography, physics or Earth science path instead. But all systems design training has a common root in cybernetics and control theory and there is a large body of mathematics behind it also which gives a deep appreciation for the importance of feedbacks, be they proportional, integral or differential. This in turn leads to complex or non-linear dynamical systems that fit directly with ecological throughput cyclical systems, or better known as living systems. Human enterprise and activity on Earth increases entropy which can also be regarded as increasing disorder or information but when living systems are the source of increased entropy, they balance this by also creating order i.e. their own self-creation(autopoeisis) to maintain their own state of existence. So entropy is balanced by anti-entropy or negative entropy and the generation of information is the generation of order. Of course living systems have a life span and are replaced by the re-production process to maintain the entropy - anti-entropy balance within the Earth system. An increase in entropy and anti-entropy is achieved by increasing biodiversity that occupies the vast range of thermodynamic gradients available within the Earth system. From an economic perspective, production and consumption need to be balanced, or rather entwined, in the Earth system i.e. production cannot occur without consumption and vice versa. In the event that production exceeds consumption this can only be regarded as a novel emergence because something new is being produced with a possible delayed balancing consumption process. This is the expression of profit within the system. So economic growth in this context is in fact an increase in anti-entropy that is the product of creating more order in a system that was previously in a higher entropic state. This is expressed by increased biodiversity. This is contrary to the existing process of economic growth that is creating entropy without balancing it with a creative anti-entropy process. The wellbeing of life and any sub-component of life(for example a local community) could therefore be seen as wealth filtered or modulated by scalar factors derived from an ecological health index, EHI, ranging from 0-1, an anti-entropy production-consumption ratio, n_ae >= 0, and a local trade-total trade ratio, 0 <= n_lt <= 1 i.e. wellbeing = wealth x EHI x n_ae x n_lt The modulating factor could be regarded as a measure of resilience and if wellbeing increases over time this would obviously indicate ecological economic growth that would fundamentally be local Wealth in this case is regarded as the total assets measured in currency being served by a server(an individual, family or community) in service to them while maintaining a balanced revenues-expenditure flow to maintain balanced relationships with those with whom trade relationships have been developed. The assets reciprocate this service by serving the server in return. Profit therefore is an outcome of the self-development of the value of assets by either or a combination of innovation, skill, creativity, knowledge, learning, responsibility, respect, care and wisdom which all result in a craft(technology) and a culture where the individual/family/community is shaped by its environment and vice versa. Although they may directly benefit from such profit, in reality all life benefits indirectly from such profit due to the ecological economic growth achieved. In summary, the architecture or design of the accountancy system fosters exploitative relationships via the simple revenue- expenditure differential that is then translated into 'profit'. This 'profit' is sourced externally whereas true profit needs to be sourced from within. True profit is the development and the increase in value of assets from within while maintaining a revenue-expenditure balance. Such true profit is the product of learning, skill, knowledge development, self-expression, respect, responsibility, culture development, co-habiting with the environment, love and care, and wisdom. It most definitely is not a product of the completely false wealth multiplier, A(n) = A(0)(1+r)^n, that generates exponential 'growth' of virtual wealth casting a widespread false indicator of wealth and consequently false power. Thank you again for this upload and keep transmitting this truthful and desperately necessary message.

All lies and advertising should be removed from the internet, and we should each pay a simple fee to use it for credible educational and entertainment purposes. The information displayed should somehow be based totally on truth and reality. This would help to prevent the internet from driving susceptible people mad, and help to avoid corrupting children and adults, and avoid causing conflicts and wars, which is what is currently happening. I suspect however, that videos such as this one are voices in the wilderness, and unless circumstances change in our thinking and in our political and economic systems, little will change, and the out of control billionaires will plunge us again into major wars in order to feed their insatiable appetites for ever more profits to provide never ending funding to drive their mindlessly crazy projects

Thank you for expressing these important ideas that are crucial for a livable future for all. Local small scale futures on a global scale definitely needs to be the objective and any who are currently achieving it are extremely fortunate. Achieving global scale though will demand a change in accountancy in particular how true wealth is accounted for. True wealth is life and growth of that wealth demands collaboration and harmony with all other life. Nature is our one and only true bank and our accounting fails to reflect this. The mathematics applied in accountancy are dysfunctional by guiding us into a state of separation with Nature. The accountancy system promotes and propagates artificial banking by virtualizing and abstracting 'wealth' into numbers casting a spell on many many to foolishly believe they are 'wealthy' or getting 'wealthy'. This is also promoted and propagated by insane laws that consistently fail to conserve the fundamental law that 'Each and every one of us is in service to all life, as all life is in service to each one of us'. All education needs to start and end with this reciprocal law which embodies the concept that one is not separate and is rather in relationship. The concept of ownership therefore is silly and stupid in this context. The concept of profit within a context of service to all presents profit as a benefit for all to share rather than something enclosed that benefits a separate entity. Accountancy and the laws that back accountancy need to be reformed to reflect reciprocal service through the reformation of mathematical relationships that give it the dysfunctional power it currently has. With such reformation, local scales on a global scale will emerge and flower naturally. Thank you again for your imagination and love.

Powerful, relevant and convincing in its beauty and hope, as well as in its accuracy about the inevitability of civilizational decline at the hands of "the" global economic structure. This structure is like the air we breathe, it is rapacious, extractive, monetizing-of-everything CAPITALISM. This kind of capitalism isn't the simple exchange of intrinsically valuable items at the local level, it is the turning of EVERYTHING into a transaction that spins off superimposed money surcharges to remote parties while the immediate local trading parties are kept from ownerships of means of their own production. Capitalism is the ultimately problem: there is no "benign" capitalism because capitalism demands infinite monetized growth to abstract owners/investors around everything that has any natural value. That growth must increase toward infinithy -- no growth is considered enough; there is always more transactional value to be piled on top of anything that has its own natural intrinsic value

Trauma (Physical, Emotional, Mental, Spiritual) >>>> Glucose Insufficiency >>>> Brain Dysfunction >>>> Anxiety, Depression, Despondency, Suicide. See Dr. David Stephens for detailed discussion and clinical results. His recent discovery (2018) makes much sense of human history and our recent situation. Perhaps the individuals involved in Localization are analogous to neurons that are still functioning in a fully or mostly-fueled state, inside a social-brain in which many or most other neurons are literally starving for the lack of their primary fuel - Glucose (due to Trauma-induced resets of supply). It could be that an early attraction in life to low-stress, supportive, local environments helps one avoid Glucose-limiting traumas; thereby preserving overall-awareness and the ability to respond to wide-ranging dangers (beyond self) in an appropriate manner. Hope this helps someone. His first book in 2020 covers all the bases.

This woman is brilliant. Experienced psychiatrists know in their hearts that the chances of “cure” (what psychiatrists and others call “remission”) for a patient with depression are small (a recent review estimated only about 15% of clinically depressed patients respond “robustly” to medication intervention). And that percentage was my experience: i knew that (try as i might, and i knew the medications and combinations as well as anyone) this was going to be a difficult time. I spoke to my patients about “community, creativity, compassion, connection…” And, as Dr. Henje states, people who are fearful for their personal safety (owing to physical or financial or other risks) cannot “get better.” The malaise/depression is a (worldwide) systemic problem. Thank you for this video.
